Your 2026 Toyota 4Runner Maintenance Schedule: Keeping Your Car Trail-Ready

The sixth-generation 4Runner brings an entirely new powertrain lineup, which means a few things have changed on the maintenance side as well. Whether you’re driving the standard i-FORCE turbocharged engine or the i-FORCE MAX hybrid, staying on top of your service intervals is the best way to protect your investment and keep your factory powertrain warranty intact.

Here’s what the schedule looks like and what St. Peters and St. Charles owners need to know:

Every 5,000 Miles

The 5,000-mile mark is your baseline check-in. At this interval, Toyota recommends a full tire rotation and a multi-point safety inspection covering brakes, fluids, belts, and filters. It sounds routine because it is — but skipping it is where deferred maintenance starts to compound. For 4Runner owners who use their vehicle on gravel roads or muddy trails around Missouri, this inspection is also a good opportunity to catch any wear that off-road use accelerates.

Every 10,000 Miles or 12 Months

This is the primary oil change interval for both the i-FORCE and i-FORCE MAX engines. Both powertrains run full synthetic 0W-20 motor oil, and Toyota’s engineering supports the extended 10,000-mile interval under normal driving conditions. That said, normal driving conditions is an important qualifier. If your 4Runner sees frequent towing, regular off-road use, or extended idling in stop-and-go St. Louis traffic, Toyota classifies that as severe use — and severe use shortens the recommended interval to 5,000 miles.

When in doubt, lean toward the shorter interval. The cost of an extra oil change is considerably less than the cost of premature engine wear on a brand-new turbocharged platform.

Every 15,000 Miles

At 15,000 miles, add 4WD propeller shaft lubrication to your service checklist. This step is easy to overlook but particularly important for owners who use four-wheel drive regularly on trails or in Missouri winter conditions. Keeping the driveline properly lubricated reduces wear on components that are expensive to repair if neglected.

i-FORCE MAX Hybrid Owners: Additional Considerations

The hybrid system in the Platinum, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter trims introduces a few specialized maintenance items. The high-voltage battery cooling intake filter should be inspected at regular intervals to ensure the battery thermal management system is operating efficiently — a clogged filter can affect both performance and long-term battery health.

This isn’t a complicated service, but it does require familiarity with the hybrid system, which is why factory-certified technicians matter here more than a general shop.

30,000 to 60,000 Miles: Driveline Fluids

For owners who tow frequently or spend time on demanding trails, driveline fluid changes — covering the front and rear differentials and transfer case — should be scheduled somewhere in the 30,000 to 60,000-mile window depending on use intensity. This interval is one of the most commonly deferred services among truck and SUV owners, and it’s one of the more consequential ones for long-term reliability.

High-Mileage Milestones

As your 4Runner climbs past 60,000 miles, a cooling system flush and spark plug replacement move onto the schedule. These are longer-interval services, but planning ahead for them keeps the vehicle running at factory spec well into high-mileage territory — which, given the 4Runner’s reputation for longevity, is exactly where many owners intend to take it.
